چکیده
Effective vaccination in sub-Saharan Africa requires the use of custom-made vaccines for specific geographic localities, due to the genetic and antigenic variability of the SAT types of FMDV. Comparison of r-values (expression of antigenic relationships between viruses) determined for ZIMJ7/8312 (a west Zimbabwean strain) and KNP/19/89/2 (originating from the Kruger National Park, South Africa) in relation to isolates from the Kruger National Park, revealed much lower r-values for ZIMJ7/83/2 than the KNP strain (Esterhuysen, 1994). The serological data demonstrated therefore the closer relatedness of the KNP strains. A similar study investigating the antigenic relationships of isolates originating from northern and southern Zimbabwe, indicated these isolates to belong to antigenically different groups (Bauman & Esterhuysen, 2000). These results were confirmed genetically which clearly showed the closer gene relationships of isolates originating in the same geographical region (Vosloo et aI., 1995; Bastos et aI., 2001). Taken together, these results are indicative of the independent evolution of FMDV in different geographical regions and argue thus for the use of custom-made vaccines.

Foot-and-mouth disease virus serotypes detected in Tanzania from 2003 to 2010: conjectured status and future prospects.
This study was conducted to investigate the presence of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) in different geographic locations of Tanzania. Epithelial tissues and fluids (n = 364) were collected from cattle exhibiting oral and foot vesicular lesions suggestive of FMD and submitted for routine FMD diagnosis. The analysis of these samples collected during the period of 2002 and 2010 was performe...

A serological survey was conducted in apparently healthy, unvaccinated indigenous Tswana goats and sheep in Kasane, Maun and Shakawe districts in northwestern Botswana in order to determine in these animals, the levels of exposure to the South African Territories (SAT) serotypes: SAT 1, SAT 2 and SAT 3 of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV). A total of 250, 142 and 134 goat sera originating res...

This paper compares strains of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) serotype SAT (South African Territories) 2 viruses isolated from Zimbabwe and other African countries using monoclonal antibodies (MAb). A sandwich-ELISA was used to examine the relative binding of anti-SAT 2 MAb to the various viruses. The MAb-binding profiles of viruses isolated from field samples were compared using hierarchical clu...
متن کاملDetection and characterization of foot-and-mouth disease virus in sub-Saharan Africa.
Genomic amplification of the VP1 gene of SAT-type foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) was performed with published and novel oligonucleotide primers. The primer pair with the highest SAT-type recognition (67%) was identified and selected for optimization. Modifications to primers significantly improved SAT-type detection (100%), broadened the recognition range to European (A, O and C) and Asian...
متن کاملCrystal structure of the 3C protease from Southern African Territories type 2 foot-and-mouth disease virus
The replication of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is dependent on the virus-encoded 3C protease (3C(pro)). As in other picornaviruses, 3C(pro) performs most of the proteolytic processing of the polyprotein expressed from the large open reading frame in the RNA genome of the virus. Previous work revealed that the 3C(pro) from serotype A-one of the seven serotypes of FMDV-adopts a trypsin-li...
